Jackie Robinson was the first black man to play professional major league baseball. In 1947, he began playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers team in New York. At the time, some white people were upset about a black man being on a pro team. People in the stands often shouted awful, (5) comments about Jackie when he came up to bat. Putting up with this kind of treatment on a (6) basis was hard for Jackie, but he never showed it. He had made an agreement with the team's manager that he would not fight back or get upset with those who called him names. Even though it was often easy for Jackie to (7) exactly who had thrown food at him or called him a name, he remained calm. To many people, this was a surprising and (8) way to respond to hate. It made people respect Robinson and, over time, it made millions of Americans realize that it was time to stop unfair treatment of black people.
